EVENTS 2024
Read on to find out which events I will be at, and come and say hello!
CHILTERN KILLS
Saturday 5th October, Gerrards Cross
Had an absolute blast on the Climate Of Crime panel at Chiltern Kills with three brilliant authors: Leye Adenle, Greg Mosse and Ajay Chowdhury where we discussed how we incorporate environmental issues and the natural world into our thrillers to ramp up tension, and how fiction can shed light on issues like climate change and climate justice to generate change.
The panel was chaired by Aneysha Minocha.
This was my first time at this festival which I really recommend, very intimate and friendly but with some really big names in the thriller community on panels, and all profits go to the charity Centrepoint.
The 2025 festival is on the 4th October, so pencil in the date and keep your eyes peeled for updates on their website and social media!
Had great fun with fellow thriller writer Greg Mosse on Radio 4’s Front Row, discussing the rise of the eco thriller in fiction and film with Nick Ahad.
If you missed it, you can catch it here.
Enjoy a blast of Abba first, then Greg & I get chatting fear and thrills about 30 mins in!
The time flew by, and I got a gold award from my publisher for managing not to let fly any swear words on live radio. We reviewed the award-winning Japanese film Evil Does Not Exist, and talked about how eco fiction resonates with thriller readers by playing on our collective fears and how it can drive emotional engagement with environmental issues.
NEWBURY LIBRARY
Friday 18th October
Had a lovely time at Newbury Library discussing my books and the research and ideas that inspired them. Some fabulous questions from the audience, and thanks to Liz Beverley and all the library volunteers for being such good hosts!
BURFORD SCHOOL TALK
Thursday 7th March
I can’t think of a better way to spend World Book Day than visiting a school and chatting to students about books.
I had a great discussion with Burford School’s sixth form English set who have been studying dystopia and imagined worlds as part of their curriculum, and it was wonderful to talk about the inspiration behind my books and my path to writing and then hear their questions, and chat to them afterwards about their career aspirations, and their writing ambitions.
Huge thanks to Bridgett, the school librarian for organising, and to Robbie for interviewing me, and to Borzoi Bookshop for supplying the books.
Bridgett very kindly sent me this feedback about my visit:
BAY TALES NOIR AT THE BAR
Friday 1st March, Whitley Bay
I had such a blast at Bay Tales, my first time in Whitley Bay. The weather was pretty interesting, and despite getting blown along the seafront in a howling storm on Friday, all the authors and readers made it safely to the Crab & Waltzer for the Noir at the Bar event where we enjoyed readings from myself and some fabulous other thriller authors to kick off the Bay Tales Festival.
I stayed on for the author panels the next day, and heard some great discussions about what makes a good thriller writer, where authors get their ideas and some of the challenges faced by novelists looking for that next killer twist! It’s a lovely friendly little festival by the sea, so if you enjoy a good thriller, I’d highly recommend it, and Whitley Bay is stunning!
BURFORD LIBRARY TALK
Tuesday February 20th
I had a lovely evening at Burford Library chatting with with Anne Youngson, Costa-shortlisted author of Meet Me at the Museum, thanks so much to everyone who came along.
We talked about the role of fiction and whether it can effect change, and how facts sometimes imitate fiction, as well as delving into the research that influences my books.
It was great to meet Anne and the Burford reading group, there were some fabulous questions!
Thanks so much to Kim at the Madhatter Bookshop for being on hand to sell copies of my books.
